TFU is involved in numerous cooperative projects and exchange programs with universities and institutions in China, Korea, Vietnam, Finland, etc. Some student exchanges are just getting off the ground, but two long-standing programs centered on students involve…Requirements and expectations are very high, but so are the level of personal support and the eventual rewards.
a summer session at the U. of Washington, Seattle—students take actual month-long undergrad course.
a one month exchange/home stay program with Dept. of Japanese, Ljubljana University.
Recruiting: General invitation raises awareness, but not so effective. Requirements can be intimidating. Fujiyama English Club—personal contacts and modeling/instruction from senior students are key. Interest in English (not starting level) important.
Preparation: Help students understand magnitude of project ahead of them. Plug into study group, including daily activities, competition, friendship, evaluation. Provide a base/home for study and sharing. Provide support, counseling, criticism, honesty. Learn with students, studying at least as hard.
Post return paper, PP presentation, etc.
Consolidate what they’ve learned. Keep them plugged in—learning, progressing. During this time, get them started on next project—preparing for next year (very important for significant growth) and/or other scholarship/exchange programs. Presentations help inspire next generation. Students also qualify for part-time employment in Center for Promotion and Language and Culture Exchange—help recruit and train students, study together, help with international activities, etc. page 10
