“Serious games” are a genre of video games designed not only for entertainment but also for educational and medical applications. Kinect (made by Microsoft) is a game device which captures the movements of the subject with an infrared camera, and reflects those movements on screen. At present, we have developed and are carrying out a program for improving motor abilities of the elderly by using Kinect. Since it enables even passive elderly persons to enjoyably continue participating in exercise, we report on the potential of this as a new technique for exercise therapy.We report on the effectiveness of exercise using Kinect as a new technique for exercise therapy. Having the elderly continue exercising is very significant for maintaining and improving their abilities.
