In conflict resolution, a lot of studies have indicated the robust effect of inclusive categorization on reducing negative attitude toward the out-group members. We examined that whether this effect and the effect of the individual’s perception on the out-group member’s categorical level reduce the sense of injustice and promote forgiveness. In this study, we focused on the international relationship between China and Japan because it has been exposed highly tension. We conducted a scenario research in which manipulated two factors, the Chinese categorical level and the Chinese perception on Japanese categorical level, for Chinese undergraduates. The result indicated that the Chinese who categorized them as Asian tend to forgive Japanese when the Chinese perceived the Japanese categorical level was also Asian more than when the Chinese perceived it as Japanese. Based on this result, we discussed the effect of the categorical level and how we can promote more inclusive categorization in daily life.
