In many conflicts, resolution is attempted according to either the principle of retribution or the principle of forgiveness. If, on the one hand, the principle of retribution is chosen, tit-for-tat aggression may escalate between both parties concerned and the conflict may grow fierce, while the principle of forgiveness, conversely, can be conducive to a constructive resolution to the conflict. The adoption of the principle of forgiveness is extremely advantageous, but it is not necessarily an easy thing for victims to carry out. This is because they would have to forgo the advantages brought about by retribution – in other words, the execution of justice. We wonder, however, if people who choose forgiveness have no alternative but to accept injustice. In this chapter, we compare the results of Western and Japanese research, focusing upon whether two values of forgiveness and fairness (kōsei) which people experience when they are harmed by others are mutually exclusive, and whether the relinquishment of justice (seigi) is mandatory in the pursuit of forgiveness.
